Emotions are powerful, but they are not always accurate. Sometimes what you feel is real, but the conclusion you draw from it may be wrong. You may feel lonely and conclude that nobody loves you. You may feel afraid and conclude that you will fail. You may feel rejected and conclude that you have no value. You may feel guilty and conclude that God can no longer use you.
But you are more than what you feel.
A God-first young person must learn the difference between feeling something and becoming ruled by it. Feelings can give signals, but they should not become masters. They can alert us to what is happening inside, but they must be examined in the light of God’s Word, wise counsel, and sober thinking.
This matters especially in the teenage and young adult years, when emotions can feel intense and identity can feel unstable. One day you feel confident; another day you feel inadequate. One day you feel accepted; another day one comment makes you question your worth. If you build your identity on feelings, you will live like a person standing on moving sand.
God gives a stronger foundation. Your identity must be rooted in what God says, not merely in what you feel, what people say, or what circumstances suggest. You are created by God. You are loved by God. You are accountable to God. You are capable of growth. You are not finished because you are struggling.
This does not mean you should ignore your emotions. It means you should not allow emotions to become the final authority over your life.
When feelings rise, pause and ask: What am I feeling? Why might I be feeling this way? Is this feeling telling the truth, exaggerating the truth, or hiding part of the truth? What does God’s Word say? Who can help me think clearly?
Emotional maturity begins when you learn to listen to your feelings without letting them lead you away from truth.
Scripture Anchor:
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7
Reflection:
What feeling has been trying to define me lately?
Prayer:
Lord, help me not to be ruled by unstable emotions. Teach me to recognize my feelings, test them by truth, and stand firm in who You say I am. I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.
