What Does It Mean to Put God First? A Practical Guide for Young People.

To “put God first” is a phrase many young people grow up hearing, but few are helped to understand it clearly. It is often reduced to religious activity such as prayer, church attendance, or outward expressions of faith. While these matter, they do not fully capture what it means to truly place God at the center of one’s life.
Putting God first is primarily a matter of order and orientation. It is about allowing God to shape how you think, decide, and live. It means that before you choose a path, you consider what aligns with truth. Before you pursue success, you examine whether your foundation is sound. Before you respond to pressure, you ask what honors God.
This kind of life is not built in dramatic moments but in quiet, daily decisions. It is seen in how you use your time, how you handle your emotions, how you relate to others, and how you respond when no one is watching.
For many young people, the challenge is not rebellion but confusion. There are many voices offering direction, including social media, peers, cultural expectations, and internal desires. Putting God first brings clarity into that confusion. It establishes a stable reference point in a constantly shifting environment.
It is also important to understand that putting God first is not about perfection. It is about priority. There will be moments of weakness, distraction, and uncertainty. What matters is the consistent decision to return to God as the starting point.
A life that begins with God does not eliminate difficulty, but it prevents disorder. It aligns your steps, disciplines your desires, and gradually shapes your character.
To put God first, then, is not simply to believe in Him; it is to live from Him.
