Many young people want to lead, but not everyone is willing to be led by God. Yet the first lesson of godly leadership is this: before you can lead people well, you must learn to follow God faithfully.
Leadership is not merely having influence, talent, confidence, or public visibility. A person can be popular and still be dangerous. A person can be gifted and still be proud. A person can be intelligent and still lack wisdom. For the God-first generation, leadership begins when the heart bows before God.
The Bible says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). This is important because leaders constantly make decisions. They choose what to say, what to support, what to reject, how to respond, and how to influence others. If a leader is guided only by feelings, pride, peer pressure, or popular opinion, that leader can easily mislead others.
A God-first leader must be teachable before God. This means asking, “Lord, what do You want?” before asking, “What will people think?” It means allowing Scripture to shape your values. It means refusing to lead from the ego. It means understanding that leadership is not first about control; it is about stewardship.
Even at a young age, you can begin practising this kind of leadership. You can let God guide your friendships, your words, your online behavior, your study habits, your service in church, your attitude at home, and your response to pressure. Leadership begins in ordinary places before it becomes visible in public places.
If you cannot follow God when no one is clapping, you may not lead well when people notice you. Hidden obedience is the foundation of public usefulness.
